Pronounced die-uh-tuh-MEY-shus and frequently shortened to ‘DE’, diatomaceous earth is a truly remarkable mineral-based substance made from the fossilised remains of algae-like water plants.
In other words, though no less simply..! DE is a naturally occurring siliceous sedimentary mineral compound from microscopic skeletal remains of unicellular algae-like plants called diatoms.
How and Why is it Good for our Chooks?
Results of studies indicate the DE has the potential to be an effective treatment to help control parasites and improve production in hens.
Whilst DE is beneficial to many farm animals, chickens and ducks respond the fastest to natural silica supplementation. Scientific trials show that chickens fed DE were noticeably larger, with more meat, stronger bones healthier and free of parasites.
DE contains many trace minerals, but the main component of DE, silica, gives many benefits to chickens. Chicks on a high-silica diet attain maximal bone re-mineralisation much quicker than those on low-silica diets. Studies indicate that chickens with DE in their diet laid larger eggs containing
more albumen, weighed more, ate more, and had fewer worms.
Diatomaceous Earth – A Key ingredient in Super Mash

- Rub along roosts and into nooks and crannies
- If your chook is infested with mites give them a good dusting down.

Safe use of DE
If you do choose to use DE, purchase only 100% food-grade (amorphous)
Completely avoid DE products containing industrial grade (crystalline) made for swimming pools and NOT for use on or around your flock.
The ingestion of food-grade (amorphous) diatomaceous earth is not toxic to mammals, but care should be taken to avoid getting DE dust into your lungs or eyes. When handling protect yourself with goggles and a face mask.
